About

B2 Gold

B2Gold Corp. is a leading international gold mining company headquartered in Vancouver, Canada, with large-scale operations in Mali, Namibia and the Philippines, as well as an advanced development project in northern Canada. The group’s portfolio produces over one million ounces of gold per year and is supported by an international workforce of approximately 6,000 employees and contractors. B2Gold has established a strong track record as a low-cost, high-margin operator, underpinned by disciplined capital allocation and a sustained commitment to responsible mining practices, including social performance, human rights, and climate-focused initiatives such as large-scale hybrid solar power solutions across its sites.

Context and Challenges

As B2Gold’s footprint expanded, expectations around responsible mining intensified across several dimensions:

  • Social performance and community engagement

  • Security and human rights practices, on and around mine sites

  • Business ethics and Code of Conduct

  • Responsible sourcing and third-party management (including contractors, suppliers and private security providers)

  • Environmental stewardship and climate impact, including how the company mitigates and reduces its operational footprint

B2Gold needed to translate these priorities into a coherent training framework that would:

  • Reach employees, contractors and relevant third parties across multiple jurisdictions

  • Clarify how policies such as the Code of Conduct, Social Performance standards and Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights apply in day-to-day situations

  • Explain the Social Performance Management System (SPMS) and how different functions contribute to it

  • Address the impact of mining activities on climate and local environments, and how B2Gold’s initiatives aim to reduce and manage these impacts

The company faced several constraints:

  • Limited internal L&D capacity – Experts in social performance, security, environment and compliance carried significant operational and stakeholder responsibilities, leaving limited capacity to develop best-in-class training content.

  • Fragmented content and formats – Guidance existed in policy documents, slide decks, audits and localized training sessions, without a unified curriculum or standardized learner experience.

  • Complex stakeholder landscape – Training had to apply not only to direct employees, but also to contractors, suppliers and security providers, who play a critical role in how B2Gold is perceived by communities and regulators.

  • Multilingual deployment – Content needed to be accessible in English, French and Spanish, and understandable for both corporate and field-based audiences.

B2Gold required a partner capable of acting as an extension of its internal teams and building a robust, scalable training ecosystem around social performance, human rights, ethics and environmental responsibility.

Why Selected LAAS by Genius

B2Gold engaged LAAS as a fractional L&D and production partner to design, build and operationalize a modern training framework. The selection was driven by:

  • Specialization in compliance, ESG and operational training, rather than generic eLearning
  • End-to-end capabilities – instructional design, scripting, multimedia production, localization and LMS integration under one umbrella
  • A partnership model that positions LAAS as an ongoing strategic collaborator, not only a vendor for individual courses, enabling B2Gold to scale a best-in-class training ecosystem without adding internal L&D headcount.

The shared objective was to convert B2Gold’s policies and frameworks into a comprehensive, multilingual learning program that could be deployed consistently across regions and stakeholder groups.

Solution Overview

In collaboration with B2Gold’s Social Performance, Security, Environment and Compliance teams, LAAS designed and implemented an integrated solution comprising curriculum design, content development, localization and LMS deployment.

1. Structured Learning Architecture

LAAS led structured working sessions to define:

  • Key audiences (executives, site leadership, security personnel, community relations teams, environmental teams, procurement and supply chain, contractors and selected third parties)
  • Learning outcomes and competencies for each audience
  • A sequenced curriculum that could be rolled out in phases

The resulting roadmap covered approximately 20 hours of formal training, organized across several core domains:

  • Social Performance Management System (SPMS): structure, standards, roles and responsibilities
  • Security and Human Rights: application of the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights in day-to-day operations
  • Code of Conduct and Business Ethics: expected behaviors, conflict of interest, anti-corruption, reporting concerns and speaking up
  • Working with Suppliers and Third Parties: expectations for contractors, suppliers and private security providers; alignment with B2Gold standards; escalation and remediation
  • Community Relations and Grievance Mechanisms: engagement with local stakeholders, handling complaints and concerns, and mitigating social impacts
  • Environmental Responsibility and Climate Impact: how mining activities affect land, water and climate; B2Gold’s initiatives to reduce emissions and environmental footprint; the role of employees and contractors in supporting these efforts

This architecture provided a clear, multi-topic learning journey aligned with B2Gold’s broader ESG priorities.

2. High-Quality Digital Learning Assets

LAAS translated policy and technical content into a cohesive suite of digital learning assets:

  • Interactive SCORM-based eLearning modules for each core domain
  • Scenario-based learning experiences that reflect real-world situations, such as:
    • Managing an interaction with a community member raising a concern
    • Responding to a potential human rights issue involving a third-party security provider
    • Applying Code of Conduct principles when a supplier relationship presents ethical risks
    • Understanding environmental constraints and climate-related initiatives at site level
  • Short videos and visual explainers to illustrate complex topics in a clear, accessible format
  • Knowledge checks and formal assessments focused on application of principles, not only definition recall
  • Facilitator materials (slide decks, briefing notes, one-page summaries) to support group sessions, toolbox talks and leadership briefings

All content was designed for clarity, operational relevance and ease of deployment.

3. Multilingual Delivery and Accessibility

To serve B2Gold’s international workforce and stakeholders, LAAS delivered core content in:

  • English
  • French (France)
  • Spanish

For each language, LAAS provided:

  • Professionally translated on-screen text and assessment items
  • Native-quality voiceover
  • Closed captions and text-only variants to accommodate accessibility requirements and low-bandwidth environments

This ensured that employees and relevant third parties receive consistent guidance, presented in a way that is understandable and culturally appropriate.

4. LMS Implementation and Administration

To centralize training delivery and governance, LAAS implemented and configured a branded Custom LMS environment for B2Gold:

  • Visual identity aligned with B2Gold’s brand
  • Course catalogs and learning paths aligned to business functions and sites
  • Cohort structures organized by region, site, function and stakeholder type (e.g., employees vs. certain contractors)

LAAS also provides ongoing LMS administration, including:

  • Uploading and updating courses and assessments
  • Managing enrollment rules and cohorts based on rollout plans
  • Supporting B2Gold’s internal administrators with reporting, dashboards and data extraction for compliance and ESG-related reporting

Partnership Model and Governance

The engagement is managed as a structured, ongoing partnership:

  • An instructional design team ensures that content aligns with B2Gold’s standards and reflects the realities of mining operations and community contexts.

  • A production and localization team is responsible for building, testing and translating all modules and media assets.

  • A dedicated Project Manager coordinates interactions with B2Gold stakeholders, manages timelines and approvals, and maintains documentation of changes and releases.

This model allows B2Gold to scale training without expanding internal headcount, while maintaining clear governance and quality control.

Outcomes and Impact

Although the training ecosystem continues to grow and be deployed across additional sites and stakeholder groups, several early outcomes are evident:

1. Integrated, multi-topic training ecosystem
B2Gold now has a unified framework that brings together social performance, human rights, Code of Conduct, supplier expectations and environmental responsibility, rather than addressing each topic in isolation.

2. Consistent standards across employees, contractors and third parties
The same core principles are now communicated clearly and consistently to internal staff and selected external partners, reducing the risk of misalignment in high-impact interactions with communities and regulators.

3. Reduced production burden on internal teams
Subject matter experts and leaders retain ownership over content direction and approvals, while LAAS manages the heavy lifting of design, development, localization and LMS management.

4. Scalable platform for future environmental, social and governance priorities
The existing architecture and LMS environment provide a ready-made pathway to integrate new topics, update existing content, expand to new sites or add additional languages, in line with B2Gold’s broader environmental, social and governance (ESG) priorities—covering climate and environmental impact, social performance and human rights, and ethical business conduct and oversight.

Summary

Through a fractional L&D partnership with LAAS, B2Gold has transformed its approach to social performance, human rights, ethics and environmental responsibility training. The result is a best-in-class, multilingual training ecosystem that supports global operations, strengthens governance, and reduces internal production pressure, while maintaining a clear, consistent message for employees, contractors and key third parties.
